My fiance and I were recently engaged, and I have since created my own blog. It will discuss the planning of a wedding from the groom's point of view. Wow, your blog is great. I'm kind of new to this, and super impressed by how well people document what they are going through.

Got any advice for a first time blogger?

John makes some good points. No question, the WEVA Creative Excellence Awards are the gold standard for awards recognizing specific works in our industry, and should be regarded as such by brides. The EventDV 25 is driven by a broader assessment of a videographer's contributions within the industry, and how a videographer is regarded as influential among his or her peers. Influence and creative excellence usually go hand in hand, but that said, I've always considered the EventDV 25 a more industry-centric type of award than the CEAs.

Where I'd disagree with John is comparing Commissioner John Goolsby to Judge Landis. Judge Landis was a virulent racist who insisted on a lifetime contract as commissioner so he could keep baseball segregated until the day he died, and thus did more to hurt the game than he did to help it. I'd consider John Goolsby much more analogous to Bowie Kuhn, who took over a strong league and made it demonstrably better. He presided over league expansion, the advent of divisional play, the lowering of the mound, and free agency, all of which made the game more exciting to fans and more labor-friendly to the players. (I'd throw the designated hitter in there too but, as a National League guy, I suspect John would take issue with that.) I'd also compare him to Commissioner Bart Giamatti, who, like John Goolsby (and John Zale and Dave Williams), was a gentleman and a scholar.

Comment on A Perfect Reception: Cake (Part IV) by tamarar82

Hi Happy Bride! Here are the answers to your questions. 1. Yes and no. The cake was the package cake, but we did have to pay an extra $2 or $2.50 per person ($250 -$300 extra) for the cake. It worked out great, though, because there was a minimum we had to meet and this helped us to meet that minimum. It's really fun when you have to decide what "extras" you're going to purchase rather than having to try to scale back to meet a budget. 2. Yes, I have seen the mansion, and it's beautiful! I would ask your Brantwyn coordinator if they have any ideas on how to transform a smaller reception space. Perhaps you can have dinner in the separate rooms, but then have everyone gather in one room for the first dance, cutting of the cake, etc. I would bet that Eventions (our lighting crew) has worked in there before, and I'm sure they'd have some great ideas for you. In the meantime, check out magazines, The Knot, and ask other brides who might be in similar situations. I don't think you'll need to hire a wedding planner! I hired my tailor, Nilah, for our same-day coordination and that was all we needed! 3. Regarding the set-up, the ladies at DCC did everything! I left them a few pages of notes on where I wanted everything, but they did it all! My florist came in first and sprinkled the roses and the crystals, set up all the centerpieces and the candles and any other decor they had, but then the DCC coordinators did everything else from the menus to the photos to the guest book to the escort cards to the place cards to the table numbers . . . you get the idea! I met with them first and dropped off all of our items and notes, and then it was in their hands. They did a great job. No separate planner necessary! However, it was helpful to have a day-of coordinator just to make sure that everything was in place and to help gather up items to transfer from the ceremony to the cars and/or reception. I hope this helps! Good luck with your wedding, and have a blast!

Wow, the cake is beautiful! My fiance and I are actually thinking about having our wedding at Brantwyn and I'm wondering a couple of things. 1 - The cake pictured above was the "package" cake? Did you pay anything extra for the beautiful flowers? 2 - Do you have any suggestions on how to find ideas on transforming a smaller reception space? I dont know if you've seen the mansion but its got lots of smaller rooms rather than one big one. I'm hoping maybe your lighting guys have done work there before. I'm really trying to avoid taking on a wedding planner (at least until the day or so before). Oh, and one other thing, I know the ladies that worked with you are no longer at DCC but could you tell me how much they actually set up for you and everything? Did you have to hire a separate planner to get the decor in place?

Thanks!!!

Hi John,
Thanks for the clarification! It's great to have the thoughts of somebody who knows and understands the field better than a newlywed bride!! So, while being voted to the EventDV 25 is a great honor, my understanding from you is that there are less "biased" awards out there. Good to know! Brides, grooms, and wedding planners, research your videographers, and check out what kinds of awards they've won. You now know of two awards that are out there!
Thanks again, John!

Hi,
DVideography is without a doubt one of the best Videographers around and well deserving of the award. However, unfortunately this list, by definition IS a popularity contest ("Polls will be open"). No video submissions are required, no qualifications necessary. To combat the problems of this list in the past, a "Commissioner" has been appointed this year. Not sure what powers that person will have, but just having to appoint one is a red flag. Baseball didn't bring in Judge Landis till there was the Black Sox scandal.

There are far more prestigious honors in our industry, notably the Creative Excellence Awards, where judging on actual work is done. DVideography has won multiple times over many years.

John Zale

I found two companies that look good. I did a bunch of google searches and searched for photos from real weddings. Check out www.boomentertainment.com and www.frostlighting.com. Ask your videographer and your photographer for suggestions, and check out The Knot's Best Of magazine to see if there are any suggestions in there. You can purchase the Best Of magazine right from The Knot's web site. Also, google away! Google words like "lighting," "Chicago," "wedding," "The Knot," "awards," etc. Hope this helps!

Hey Renata! Great question!! I'm researching it for you, and I'll post another reply comment when I have an answer. In the meantime, I would ask any top-notch videographers in your area. Our videographer is one of the top-rated videographers in the WORLD as voted on by EventDV Magazine (www.eventdv.net), and so great lighting is very important to him. He recommended our vendor, Eventions. I'm going to see what I can find in your area, and I'll let you know!
